My Toyota

Post by Guilty By Design on Sat Jan 31, 2009 8:39 pm

Heres my 91 toyota ive been working on since september 06. I bought it through a friend in Nashville and went to pick it up during a rainstorm. The truck was already bagged (rough) and channeled to the rocker, so i picked up a stock cab while i was at it and planned on a fast bagjob so i could enjoy it during the 07 season.
When i got it home i started the teardown, i was gonna backhalf it and throw the stock cab on (un-bodydrop it).

Then as i tore into it i started seeing things... things i didnt like

So at this point i needed a backhalf, and i needed to redo the front framehorns and bag mounts. Went ahead and pulled the cab off and found more hackwork

The frame was visibly out of square... so at this point im thinking ill just go ahead and build a 3/4 sfbd frame, still wanted to drive it all show season. But as i was measuring to cut the front clip off i found the front frame section was neither square or level. I was gonna buy another toyota frame but dad insisted i make my own front clip and show what i can do. So since the fast buildup idea was out the window i went ahead and started on it.

So i planned on:
full tube air storage sfbd chassis
18'' wheels
my own upper and lower control arms
foward triangulated lever 4 link
slam RE7s all around
3/8 smc valves
EDC
22re motor/5 spd
Got started on the frame. Its made of 2''x3'' 3/16'' thick tubing

Used my lazer cut "swoop" axle tabs

Set the cab on

Got started on the lower arms, theyre made from 1'' DOM tubing with a 1/4'' wall thickness and MOOG screw in style ball joints.

Then did the uppers, theyre made of 4 lazer cut 10ga pieces then boxed in, moog screw in ball joints, and 5/8 teflon lined heim joints.

Pulled it all apart and spent 3 days grinding and sanding then took it to spring bash

Fast foward to Jan last year, got the itch to make it a quadcab so i bought a 4runner and made it happen.

Got the bodywork done in time for Sparks 3, took it down there and won best engineered

Thats where it sits today, got the back cab wall shaved and found out the bed i just bought is JUNK.

Been playing with it recently afterhours. I got the tranny tunnel 90% done, shaved the back cab wall, stripped some more paint, cut off the messed up rear door skin, and been doing more sheetmetal. I also got a rack&pinion.
started with this

the door lock is located on the back for pickups and on the front for 4runners, so i ended up having both.
made these

ended up with this

Decided to stick with my 22RE motor so i stuck it back in the truck and made the tranny tunnel. Im using an Xcab driveshaft for mock up and ill just stretch the front half when the time comes. The tunnel is only 4.5'' tall so i was even able to fit the bench seat in the back with some minor mods.

I had to bust ass to have it ready for sparks last year and i never was happy with the drivers side rear doorskin. It was low all across the length and we couldnt get it pulled out, so i had all my friends at the show sign it and i finally got around to cutting it off fri night.

ill get some metal ordered up and make my own doorskin. The hard part is gonna be putting the handle hole back in it.
