welder or wheels?

Post by BaggedSplash on Wed Jul 15, 2009 7:08 pm

so as some of you know, ive been looking for wheels for my truck but i hadnt had much success at finding some. well last night i had an epiphany and thought maybe i should get a welder instead. problem is i dunno how to weld but i was thinking about taking a welding class at a local community college to learn. ive been wanting to learn how to weld for awhile now and i figured that i could get alot of use out of the welder. on the other hand, i need wheels for my truck pretty bad. my truck looks too bland without some 18s (or 20s) and i wanna step it up a bit. also, im tired of people asking me when am i gonna get some wheels for it...lol. anyways, help me decide!!

a welder and look for deals on wheels on craigslists...you can get 18s for $300-$400 and roll with those for a while

yeah ive been looking on craigslist but not having much luck. most of the wheels people are selling are "universal 5-lug" but fail to mention what 5-lug patterns are on there and ive got THE worst 5-lug pattern imaginable (5x114.3 or 5x4.5). also, alot of people are selling FWD wheels and im not too keen on buying spacers.

5x4.5 is pretty common toyotas, some fords most chevys have a 5x4.5 oh and a welder will make you $$$ to buy wheels. im gonna be honest what they teach you in school and what you weld in the garage are 2 diffrent things. they have tons of welding books you can pick up and read then just practice practice practice.

where I think school would be bennificial would be in learning technique. Pratice will also teach you this to a certain extent, reading will also help give you some ideas on new techniques.
Best advise I can give ya is if you are going to skip the school route, go get a couple books, do some reading then grab some metal and weld it all together in the middle of the garage.
A buddy grabbed random metal bits and welded a huge pile together in the middle of his garage. It gave him expierence in welding different angles and in different positions. His welds look amazing today and most of that came from him just going out int he garage and doing it.
I vote for a welder!
